(Spoiler Alert: If you have not read Book 1 of the Venerable Series, "Venerable: The Price of Paradise," please do so before reading this blog.)

Many readers have wondered about the significance of the use of the letter “V” as a logo and the first letter of the titles of the books in the Venerable Series. It was highly intentional, so first of all, I am happy they noticed. Some have also asked about the roses and chains adorning the “V” logo.

The symbols of the Chalice and Blade have existed since the dawn of recorded history and repeated across many diverse cultures. The Chalice, also referred to as a Vessel, is most often a classic symbol of feminine power and divinity. The female womb is literally a physical vessel that creates life. Metaphysically, at its most primal level, a Vessel is a sacred container that not only creates, but also sustains, nurtures, and protects. It also represents wisdom, grace, and inspiration.

The Vessel is well known in Western and Christian culture as the Holy Grail, understood as the Chalice Jesus Christ drank wine from during the Last Supper. This limiting literal interpretation was most popularly exposed in “The DaVinci Code” by Dan Brown, and the subsequent movie starring Tom Hanks. Brown’s suggestion of its more universal symbolic meaning even resulted in controversy.

The Chalice or Vessel is commonly symbolized most simply by the letter “V.”

The Blade is the opposite of the Vessel. Often represented as an upside-down “V,” signifying the tip of a sword or spear, it is typically a symbol of masculine power and divinity. It is sometimes portrayed as a phallus, a physical representation of the male penis. Metaphysically it represents strength, force, and protection.

When these two opposite symbols unite as one, they form other well-known symbols, such as the Star of David, representing they are more powerful and complete when together.

What better way to symbolize the power, wisdom, and inspiration of a seemingly perfect all-female society than with the Vessel, or letter “V.” As we learned, however, it was incomplete, marred by its reliance on the chains of bondage. The beauty of the rose also contains the pain of its thorns.
